Seville was once known as the city of convents, visiting the convent is an experience to travel back in time and learn about a key part of the city’s history. The most notable artists of the Italian Renaissance and the most important painters and sculptors of the Sevillian baroque period came to this convent. Today all these wonders can be seen in the museum and church of the monastery of Santa Paula. At the end of the visit, we will have the opportunity to buy handmade products made by the sisters, such as jams and sweets.
Private tour

Our visit to the Convent of Santa Paula is undoubtedly a special experience to add to your trip to Seville. This isolated monastery was founded at the end of the 15th century to escape from the busy life of the city, here the Hieronymite nuns led a life centred on prayer and work, “ora et labora”.
Today the religious temple is part of the city that has been frozen in time. The monastery continues to house the community of Hieronymite nuns, who combine secluded life with the opening up of certain areas to the outside world and the sale of artisan products, such as jams and sweets.
During our visit we will learn about the history and heritage of the monastery, the meditative life and study of the nuns who lived here. As well as the influential roles that some of these religious women played on the society of their time, becoming advisors to kings and confidants to the nobility.
We will explore the life and work of these powerful women who left their mark on the Catholic Church and how their religious life allowed them to have a certain social status and power. Although this type of spiritual life also had its risks, as the line separating the miraculous from heresy was very fine.
We will visit the convent museum founded in the 20th century by the prioress Sister Cristina de Arteaga, one of the first cloistered museums and a perfect way to get to know the heritage in its original context.
